Hello there! This blog is a journal of my attempt to lose 40 pounds. I turned 49 years old in early June of 2009, and I realized that if I want to do something about my weight, I better get going sooner rather than later. To paraphrase Captain Picard from Star Trek “Generations”, I have become aware that there are more days behind me than ahead.
For a while, I was doing fairly well by walking two miles most weekdays along the Kennebec River Rail Trail. I went from a high of 211 pounds in February of 2009, to 192 pounds. But I seem to have stalled there, and in fact have gained back five pounds. So I decided to do something about it.

Six pounds lighter after one month of walking, biking, light weights, and improved eating habits.

Here is a "before" photo when I weighed about 211 pounds.
My plan is to document on a daily basis what form of exercise I engage in, how much (miles, minutes, reps, and so on), and-potentially most embarrassing-my weight. At least once per week I’m going to post a longer update, with observations on the past week, and what ever else may seem relevant.
My goal is to establish a regular habit of exercising and at the same time, through my commitment to this blog, to make myself more accountable about keeping up with my plan. It is all too easy to fall into the mindset of “I’ll start next week”, yet “next week” never arrives. It is my hope that this blog will provide an ongoing incentive.
This could be interesting! 06/11/09
More power too you! For the greatest and best (more fat vs muscle) weight-loss, weight-work is a must. Aerobics alone can not only reduce fat, but a disasterous muscle loss too. In fact, after the age of 35, with no excercise, our body naturally loses 1/2 lb of muscle and gains 1.5 lbs of fat due to metabolic shift.
I recommend some heavy weight work, twice a week. I have some tapes I can loan you that combine the weights and aerobicsm into one workout for efficiency. Plus then weather is not an issue.
No sissy tapes here! They work!
All the best,
Elizabeth
Thanks for the support, Elizabeth! I’m definitely going to incorporate some weight training as you suggest. Jim
